The undergraduate advisor for the film department is named Joe Palladino, and if you're a film major, he's like your mom and dad all rolled into one. I happen to spend a lot of time in Joe's office, which cool because it's filled with tons of cool stuff, and this note is by far the coolest.
I saw this hanging on the wall and looked at Joe. "Is that... Steven Spielberg?" I asked. "Yes... yes it is," Joe replied.
We had an old professor by the name of Lazarus who had retired long before I came to UCSB. He was a successful producer, and according to Joe, he was talking to Spielberg at a party one night (casually, of course). He mentioned that he was teaching screenwriting now that he was semi-retired, and Mr. Spielberg grabbed the nearest piece of paper. He scribbled this on it, folded it up, handed it to Lazarus, and said, "Here, show that to your kids." It hung in his office until he retired, and then Joe saved it from the trash as he was moving out.
I haven't had a lot of time to write lately, but I have that half-finished script (which made the photo for Day 79) waiting for me to finish it. Seeing this makes me want to keep chugging along.
