Day 79

79/365, originally uploaded by Aaron LaRue.

I spent the last 6 weeks working on a screenplay for my film class. Today I turned in the fruits of my labor.

This is only the first half, a hefty 60 page beast. It is the longest thing I have written to date, which is super exciting, and it's not completely terrible. Now I just need to write the other half and we'll be in business...

I'm actually kind of stoked on the lighting for this. I knew I wanted to take a picture of my screenplay after it was printed, but I wanted it to be interesting. I grabbed a flash and started playing around with the composition. The main thing here was that I wanted to see the thickness (it was a LOT of writing), and I wanted the title to be somewhat visible but not in your face. When I settled on that, I got my new favorite V.A.L. (voice-activated lightstand) JT to hold the flash for me. We put it lower and camera left, raking across the pages. Then, to add some drama, I used a  HonlPhoto 1/8" Honeycomb Speed Grid. I recently bought one of these and I am amazed at how effective it can be when used right. It basically turns the light, which would normally spill all over, into a concentrated shaft. For the photo above, it's the reason why the pages and part of my bed are lit and the rest falls to black. I also used it a few days ago, on Day 77, to create a nice vignette around the razor blades. I'm loving it, which could be a bad thing, because it makes me tempted to start buying more toys...
