Day 334

334/365, originally uploaded by Aaron LaRue.

I've been neglecting my guitar for a while, today I gave it some love.

They (and to be honest, I don't really remember who "they" are) say that playing your guitar should be like shaking hands with an old friend. I've always liked thinking about my guitar as an old friend. I've had this guitar for about 8 years, which isn't that impressive until you consider that I've had it for more than 1/3 of my life.

When I was about 11 years old, I wanted an acoustic to play when we went camping, and I had all but decided on a guitar in the store. My dad, who was there as my negotiator and who knows nothing about guitars, picked this one off of the shelf because he "though it looked cool." I fell in love and I've been in love ever since. I used to play a lot before I came to college. Camp fires, parties with friends, jam sessions in Fred's garage, it was a blast. Over the last year, I've been putting my guitar down and picking up my camera, but lately I've had the urge to visit an old friend.

Then I decided to play the music for my Reel Loud, and now I've been playing a lot. My strings were shot, so it was time to replace them with some elixirs. I realized early on (around 10 years old), that I could save a lot of money by learning to restring my guitar myself, and after a while I've actually come to enjoy it. The process itself is tedious, but when I finish and let that first beautiful G chord ring out, it's worth it. I fall in love all over again.
