Day two of chopping film and my editing bay got an upgrade.
I liberated some rewinds and things are moving a lot more quickly. I finished separating the shots, and then using my log book, I mentally edited my film. I figured out what should go where, what shots to use, and the pacing. It was a pretty odd process, because I couldn't actually see what I was doing, it was all pre-visualization.
Once I figured it out, I started splicing clips together. Working with film is a total pain in the ass, but you do build a relationship with it. You start to get a sense of pacing by judging how long your strips of film are, I started just cutting by feel. It's a totally consuming process. I spent pretty much all day in this chair, but it was completely enjoyable. I feel almost rejuvenated. With your hands busy working, your mind is free to think and I just feel good about life. If you are every overly stressed, this is a good way to sort things out.
For the most part, I finished my rough cut today. Once I get my hands on a projector I'll see how I actually did. Hopefully this whole non-digital workflow doesn't come back to bite me in the ass!
