Day 327

327/365, originally uploaded by Aaron LaRue.

I got a "DIY" ring flash today.

I put DIY in quotes because it comes in a kit, so it's not like I made it from scratch.

I tend to make a lot of DIY gear, and usually it works pretty well. I've attempted making a ring flash a few times before and while they work, they aren't great. They're not evenly lit and usually aren't very efficient. And they usually look pretty monstrous, so it's not something I would pull out with confidence.

But I was reading Strobist the other day, and they posted a link to this bad boy. It's made entirely out of cardboard and a laminate material, so it's not the most rugged piece of gear that I own, but it works surprisingly well. You do have to assemble it yourself, which I guess is the "DIY" part. Here's what it looked like when I opened the box:

But for $40 bucks, I figure it was worth a shot. I'll be busting it out on some shoots in the near future, but so far I'm pretty stoked with it.
