Day 300

300/365, originally uploaded by Aaron LaRue.

300 days. That blows my mind. And I spent the whole day at Cam Con, so I was surrounded by camera stuff on this mini-milestone. These guys next to me are two of the best steadicam operators in the world, and they're also two of the nicest people I've ever met.

The SOC guys come up to Cam Con every year and it's easily my favorite part of the weekend. They have some awesome stories and they seem like they love their jobs more than any other industry person I've met. It's inspiring, and after this weekend I'm seriously considering trying to become a steadicam operator.

On top of playing with some steadicams, we also got to screen the Single Chip Camera Evaluation test in the Pollock Theater today, which was a treat. Long story short, Bob Primes put together a side-by-side comparison of some of the leading digital cameras in the market today, comparing them to each other and to film. It debuted at NAB less than a week ago, and only a few hundred people have seen it so far, so we were very lucky to have Bob Primes come and give us his presentation. It was awesome to see how these cameras stacked up against each other, and I have to say I was shocked at how good the Arri Alexa and the Sony F3 held up in comparison to film. Most of the time they looked just as good, and in some circumstances they even looked better! And while the Canon 5D footage looked like it still had a ways to go, Primes hinted that Canon has something up their sleeve, but he couldn't elaborate due to a confidentiality agreement. What a tease, right?

Overall it was a great day, I had a great weekend. Big thanks to Dan Kneece, Dave Frederick, Steve Fracol, Dan Ikeda, Leigh Mierke, Austin Keller and all the other guests, and of course Jane Kim, TV Ho, Ben Iker and everyone else who helped make Cam Con happen this year!
