The fun never stops! I got to see Portugal. The Man on campus last night, and since I shot it for the paper, I went fo' free!
This is the first concert I've really shot with a press pass, so that was super sick. I got to go in front of the barricade for the first three songs so I had the best seat in the house (and it damn near left me deaf, too). This is the second time I've seen this band and they are amazing live. They have a kind of generic ADD: one minute they're heavy and hard and I feel like I'm back at a BLS concert with Jesse. The next, the lead singer, is crooning like the Cold War Kids. THEN they break down into something that sounds more like The Specials, and after that, they'll end the same song with some smooth jazz. It's pretty nuts, and they manage to blend it all together seamlessly. The lead singer was fun to watch too, I couldn't take my eyes off of him (it might have just been that beautiful guitar, though).
I took about 100 pictures, but I liked this one a lot because I got lucky. There were a couple of other photographers there, and they had big flashes that they were shooting off at full power. I hate the look of on camera flash, so for a little bit I just shot it without one. With no flash from my camera, my shutter speeds were longer (about 1/3 of a second), so I was able to catch the flash off of other people's cameras if I timed it right. That's what happened here, and I was lucky to get some light that had some shape to it and that didn't blow everything out. I'm stoked on it, it feels good when you get lucky.
Here is their song "Salt" if you are interested...
